George is the business centre of the Southern Cape and the hub of the region for shopping, medical services, sports, education etc.

It is also a popular holiday destination within easy reach of famous beaches like Victoria Bay, Herolds Bay, Glentana and Wilderness. There are mountains, forests and lakes and lots of outdoor activities in the vicinity 

George is famous for golf with quite a few world class courses in and around town.

The flora varying from cape fynbos to Afromontane forests is a great attraction and nature can be discovered on foot or driving the Montagu pass to Herold or old 7 passes to Knysna. There is also the Outeniqua powervan taking tourists up the mountain for panoramic views and picnics.

The Outeniqua railway museum is very interesting, covering the history of steam engines in South Africa.

George has quite a few good restaurants where a variety of  cuisines can be enjoyed
